Writing a Book Description That Invites the Click
Your description has seconds to work. Here's a simple structure to make every line count.

Readers skim. A book description should tell them, almost instantly, what kind of experience your book offers and why it's worth their time.
Lead with the hook
Open with the single most intriguing tension in your book. For fiction, that's often a character facing an impossible choice. For non-fiction, it's the problem the reader recognises in themselves.
Signal the genre
Use language and comparisons your readers associate with the genre. Clarity beats cleverness.
A simple structure
- Hook: one or two short lines
- Setup: who, where, what's at stake
- Escalation: what makes it harder
- Promise: the experience the reader will have
Finally, read it aloud. If you stumble, a browser will too.
